Whichever game you play, the main aim of winning remains the same. That is beating the dealer, by getting a Blackjack win of 21. Or beating the Dealer’s total without going over 21. If either of your totals exceeds 21, then it’s a ‘Bust’ meaning an automatic loss.

Take a look at some of the Variations of the Blackjack games that are mentioned below. While the basic rules remain the same, the points mentioned here, highlights only the differences among them. Before playing a game of Blackjack, it is always wise to look at the Blackjack rules.

Blackjack Games

Traditional Blackjack

Blackjack is played with one, two, four, six or eight decks. Both the Dealer and you receive two cards each. The Dealer with his one card dealt face down (called as the hole card). The total of your cards should not exceed 21 but should be higher than the Dealer’s. If the total goes over 21, then it’s a Bust deal and a losing hand.

The term Blackjack is a natural win when the cards contain an Ace and a 10 value card and totals 21.

European Blackjack

The main difference between the European and the Traditional Blackjack is the way the cards are dealt. It is played with 2 decks. The players are dealt two cards face up. The Dealer gets one card face up. The hole card (a card which is dealt face down) is not dealt until the player makes a decision to either split or double. Or else to hit or stand. There is Double Down only for a hand whose total is 9, 10 or 11.

Atlantic City Blackjack

The game is played with 8 decks. The Dealer is allowed to peek at his hole card and stand on a soft 17. The players can resplit up to 3 hands. Late surrender and insurance option is available.

Vegas Strip Blackjack

A typical American blackjack game, Vegas Strip Blackjack allows the Dealer to stand on soft 17. Peeking at the hole card, double down after splitting aces is also allowed. But you cannot double down after splitting. Player can re-split up to 3 hands.

Spanish 21

Spanish 21 is played with six or eight deck cards. All the 10 value cards are removed from the 52 cards leaving only 48 cards to begin the game. This increases the house edge.

Insurance and Late surrender are allowed. The players can even surrender after doubling down. This means the players keep the double portion of the bet while Dealer keeps the original bet. Peeking of the hole card is allowed for the Dealer. If it’s a blackjack, then it’s an automatic win unless the player also has a blackjack. In this case the player wins the hand.

Super Fun 21

A recent Variation of the Blackjack games, Super Fun 21 is one deck game. The blackjack pays even money rather than the usual 3:2 payout. But a Diamond Blackjack (a diamond Ace and a 10, J, Q or K of diamonds) gets a 2:1 payout. A natural blackjack from the player always wins even if a tie happens.

The players can hit, stand, double or split on any number of cards.

Blackjack Switch

An interesting Variation of the Blackjack games, the Blackjack Switch allows players to receive two hands of cards. All the cards are dealt face up. He can improve on the cards he is holding by switching to the second pair of cards.

The Blackjack pays 1:1 for all. If the Dealer has a Blackjack he wins. But if the player also has a blackjack before making the switch, then the dealer returns the bet amount.

Pontoon

It’s the same Traditional Blackjack game with all the same rules. The fun twist is just in the names given to the standard Blackjack terms. A Blackjack is called a Pontoon, a Hit is called a Twist, a Stand is called a Stick.

There are a lot more Variations of the Blackjack games that are available online. While it’s not possible to list all of them, these are the more common ones. Each of all the variations offers varied player experience. Keep track of the different Blackjack rules before playing and version of the game.
